Members of the school’s year five/six girls’ Aussie rules team will compete in the state finals of the Paul Kelly Cup, having swept all teams before them in the Western Region and then Sydney West Region tournaments.
The Paul Kelly Cup, the largest AFL primary school competition in NSW and the ACT, is open to students in years five and six.
Holy Family defeated Kellyville Public School in the decider at the regional finals held at Blacktown in western Sydney after finishing on top of their pool and then winning their semi.
The final against Kellyville was a tough encounter, according to Holy Family principal Kevin Arrow, in which the half-time score was 0-0.
“The Kelso girls rallied in the second half, taking out the match 12-0 in wet conditions,” he said.
This is the third year that a Holy Family girls’ team has progressed to the state finals, according to Mr Arrow.
The team won the Paul Kelly Cup in 2015.
Eight girls’ teams from government and non-government schools will play in the finals day at the SCG on Monday.
“The Holy Family AFL girls are a very strong defensive side,” Mr Arrow said.
“The girls are years five and six students and have an excellent skills set. Their kick-pass ability is of a very high standard.
“The girls will represent Holy Family with pride.
“Training at lunchtimes has been regular and the girls are keen to do well now they go to the SCG.”
Games in the Paul Kelly Cup, which has been running for more than 15 years, are played on a smaller field using modified 12-a-side rules.
