As Fearnley pushed towards his fifth win in the 14 kilometre event, he encountered a mechanical issue.
“About halfway up Heartbreak Hill my right wheel started to come loose and I asked everyone who passed from that point on if they had an allen key,” he said.
“Thankfully by about nine kilometres in I found someone who did and he put the wheel back on and it was back on the way.”
Fearnley, who won the City2Surf’s inaugural wheelchair category race in 2011, went on to win in 41 minutes, 21 seconds. He was well clear of runner-up Richard Coleman (45.03).
Though Fearnley was well off his course record push of 33.22 which he clocked last year, he was still quick than first runner home Harry Summers (42.16).
Bathurst’s Nick Zawadski finished 51st of 8,239 runners in his male 20-29 years division with a time of 51.56.
