When the Giants entered the league in 2014 with teams in the under 15s and under 12s competitions, there was a question mark over how competitive the club would be.
It was the second Bathurst club in the league, the Giants having joined the Bushrangers.
But since that point both the Giants and Bushrangers have enjoyed success and now the two clubs are represented on a senior level as well.
Though Giants are yet to make an appearance in the Central West AFL’s seniors finals series, over the last two seasons the club has made a vast improvement at that level.
And it is the developing juniors that have played a huge role in seeing that happen.
“We've really focused on our juniors - I think we are taking a really good course of action here,” Darryl Macauley, who coached the under 14 Giants to grand final glory on Sunday said.
“The 14s won last year, that was against a Bushies side, and a lot of those kids that played this year played in that game as well. It is back-to-back for a lot of them.
“It really is that the strength of your seniors in a couple of years will be the strength of your juniors now. We've got to keep hold of those kids and keep developing them.
“That's certainly the path we are trying to put these kids on, that's for sure.”
Sunday’s win in the 14s was the third time Giants had won a flag in that age group -adding to the 2016 and 2015 victories.
In Giants’ inaugural season it won the under 15s crown, the under 12s tasted success in 2015, last year the Bathurst club was undefeated in under 18s, while on Sunday the under 16s were crowned champions.
“This year a lot of those 16s have played a lot of first grade football and this is a pathway that we wanted to give them, so it certainly holds them in good stead,” Macauley said.
“We did our pennance last year in seniors, getting smacked by 100 points and all that sort of stuff. But two weeks ago when the Giants beat the [Bushrangers] Outlaws … they had their full team and we had half the side that were kids of 16 or 17.”
