Bathurst Giants’ Molkentin and Bushrangers’ Brown have enjoyed strong seasons for their respective club under 16s and now have the chance to take their game to the next level.
Along with their club commitments the pair have also enjoyed time with the Cental West under 15s development squad.
Coach of the development squad Casey White isn’t surprised to see the duo being asked to train on over the summer.
“It’s really exciting from a Central West point of view that we’re able to get a couple of boys into this training squad,” he said.
“Both of them are very talented players and it shows that there’s a pathway for our young players to go through if they put their heads down and work hard for it.”
Molkentin and Brown faced off in Sunday’s Central West AFL under 16s grand final, with the former finding a goal in the Giants’ win.
The inclusion in the off-season training squad doesn’t guarantee the two boys a spot in the final team.
However, it gives them an excellent chance to impress the academy staff and put themselves through an invaluable learning experience.
“From what I’ve been told it should be a similar setup to what the academy would be putting the final group through next year,” White said.
“Jason Saddington, who is the coach of the academy, will be running the sessions. It’s going to give the boys a chance to get coaching that they wouldn’t be able to get out here in the Central West.”
Saddington has been at the head coaching role of the academy for the past three years.
Molkentin and Brown will get the opportunity to learn from the former AFL player who enjoyed 142 matches for the Sydney Swans.
White said Molkentin and Brown’s chance to progress wouldn’t be possible without the opportunities provided by Central West AFL.
“It’s all stemmed from the Central West development squad. As under 15s they don’t have a GWS zone team that they can try out for yet,” he said.
“The purpose of our under 15s squad is to try and get them ready for that under 16s academy.”
The Central West under 15s wrapped up their training commitments for the year in last week’s session at George Park.
The Greater Western Sydney zone teams will be announced over the coming weeks, with the Central West’s under 13s, 14s and 15s vying for a position.
