A career of high quality races to his name and a start from gate one meant Dream To Share was sent out an odds-on favourite for Wednesday night’s race.
However, Taylor Hood ($4.70, Bernie Hewitt) made Turnbull’s gelding work hard for the victory over the final 200m.
Dream To Share chipped away at Hewitt’s leader in the closing stages to grind out a half neck win.
The mile rate was 1:57.7.
Turnbull said once her gelding got focused on the home straight he looked like a winner.
“I thought I could get him. My fella was just playing up a bit, hanging out, but once he straightened up a bit he went alright,” she said.
“It was always the plan tonight [to take the sit behind the leader]. We’ve tried him a couple of times in front, but he just gets a bit tired and he’s better as a chaser.
“He’s had 12 months off. He had a lot of problems and had a stress fracture in his hock. This is his first run back, but he’s had two trials and looked good.
“When you look at him he’s still a bit fat so hopefully we can get him a bit more thin too.”
At the green light no-one looked determined to take up control of the race.
Hallycould ran alongside Dream To Share over the opening 100m before Taylor Hood came across from gate six to lead the way.
Turnbull was happy to sit behind Taylor Hood. Write About Me took the death seat with Hallycould in tow.
The first move came at the 400m when Ma Koo Loo Hambo worked three wide from the rear of the field.
Hallycould pushed Ma Koo Loo Hambo out four wide when he also pulled out wide for the run home.
Taylor Hood continued to lead the way when the field straightened, and the outside runners weren’t able to throw up a challenge.
The only horse close enough to take it to Hewitt’s leader was Dream To Share.
Turnbull’s shifted inside to make use of the sprint lane but didn’t blitz by Taylor Hood.
Instead, Dream To Share was forced to work hard for the victory in an exciting duel to the post.
Limbo Larry ($14.80) won the battle for third.
Dream To Share’s class shone through as he succeeded in first ever Australian start away from Menangle.
It was the beginning of a great night of results at the Bathurst Paceway for Turnbull.
Miss Vera Mac won the night’s other Country Series Heat to continue her intimidating run of results on Australian soil.
The McArdle mare won in a mile rate of 1:55.4 to make the most of her first Bathurst start, just like her stablemate.
Our Apachee Miss ($1.30) was Turnbull’s third winner of the night, winning the Hynash Constructions Pace in dominant fashion, while Quaint Glen and Alex Pollizzi found runner-up finishes in their races.
