Amid the morning rush of coffees, cakes and sausage rolls, staff at the Keppel Street institution took a moment to congratulate employee Debbie Gillman on racking up 20 years with the shop.
I have enjoyed every bit of it. It's not work. This is family for me.
- Debbie Gillman of Carah's Cakes.
“It’s a long time in business these days,” Colleen Carah of Carah’s Cakes said.
But Ms Gillman said her days in the bakery often don’t feel like work at all.
“Twenty years has gone so quickly,” she said.
“I love what I do. I love meeting people, I love customer service.
“I have enjoyed every bit of it. It’s not work. This is family for me.”
And Ms Gillman said she will be adding to her two decades because she has no plans to leave the business any time soon.
“I’m part of the furniture,” she said.
“I would not want to be anywhere else.”
Eagle-eyed customers who missed the official presentation to Ms Gillman on Monday might still have noticed a reference to her anniversary on the menu boards behind the front counter.
The Carah’s Cakes business only celebrated its own 20th anniversary as recently as 2013.
