Gulson was chasing his first top 10 finishes of the season during the weekend’s third round of the national series and managed to achieve that goal in every race.
Eighth, 9th and 10th place results over the three races at Eastern Creek has got Gulson feeling good about his chances of a podium finish at Mount Panorama this October.
Not only did Gulson pick up his first top 10 results of the year but he also boosted his position in the championship from 15th to 11th.
“We had a really good, clean weekend down there. We finished in the top 10 through the round – from practice right through to race three,” Gulson said.
“I’m really glad with the way it turned out. We came away with some good championship points.
“We probably had the speed to make an appearance in the top five but I’m still happy because it was close, fair racing all weekend. We were actually the only category across the weekend to go safety car free.
“My only unfortunate moment was in race two where we were sitting in sixth position but had an average moved put on us at turn eight.
“We were forced wide, and it’s hard to keep your rhythm going at that point of the track when that happens. That’s just how racing goes sometimes.”
Despite the unfortunate start to the season for Gulson over the opening two rounds at Phillip Island and Townsville he’s still in a stronger position than at this stage last year.
With that in mind the Bathurst driver can’t wait to have another crack at Mount Panorama.
“I think the whole field has moved up in quality this year. Everything’s been raised up a notch but thankfully we’ve got more of a handle on things this year,” he said.
“The most important thing to come out of this weekend is that we’ve moved up four spots in the championship.
“Given the difference between this year and last year we should have a good shot at Bathurst. I will be pushing for a win there.”
Cameron Hill enjoyed a dominant weekend of racing at Sydney Motorsport Park with wins in all three races.
Gulson will now take on Mount Panorama hoping to emulate his memorable round podium result at the track last season.
Following the round at Bathurst (October 5-8) the Toyota 86 field will take on the unknown territory of the inaugural Newcastle round (November 24-26).
