Installed just in time for Book Week, 2017, the mural depicts scenes and characters from popular children’s books and is designed to promote the joy of reading to students as they climb the stairs to the library.
The project is the final phase of a major $20,000 refurbishment of the school’s library, which began last year thanks to a generous donation by the school’s P&C and was coordinated by school librarian Giovanna Morris and P&C vice-president Sueann Brown.
The vibrant artwork was created by Orange artist Jaq Davies and features Possum Magic, The Hungry Caterpillar, Mr Men characters and many others. Ms Davies also painted the library steps to resemble the spines of much-loved books in a bid to inspire them to read more.
“I have really enjoyed working on this fantastic commission for Bathurst Public School and bringing all these characters to life has been a wonderful challenge,” Ms Davies said.
“Thank you to all the various publishers who allowed me to use their delightful images.”
Bathurst Public School principal Kate White said the library refurbishment has had a positive effect on staff and students.
“Our library was looking a bit tired but we now have colourful new furniture and artwork that makes it a fun and inspiring place to be,” Mrs White said.
“The students have been very excited about the changes and both the staff and P&C hope that it shows them how much we value their continuing efforts to become better readers.
“It’s certainly a great way to celebrate Book Week,” Mrs White said.
