Independent candidate Alex Christian, who has a policing background, said he was appalled that the city didn’t already have a comprehensive CCTV network.
“I for one cannot believe in the year 2017, Bathurst does no have an effective CCTV system in its CBD,” he said.
“It is completely unacceptable in a town that has the largest sporting event annually, that brings in approximately 150,000 people, that we do not have this security.”
Mr Christian said figures from Dubbo before and after CCTV was installed proved that a similar system would work in Bathurst.
In 2002 prior to CCTV there were 180 street offences, which then dropped to just 36 offences after a system was installed.
“All of you deserve better. That is my number one policy,” he said.
Bob Triming, who is a candidate for Group D, also placed his support behind getting CCTV for Bathurst.
He said he has previously placed submissions on matters relating to CCTV and it would be something he would pursue if elected to council.
“The North-Veness team, North especially, have been vocal in wanting CCTV cameras in the CBD,” he said.
