Popularly-elected mayor: Yes I would support a referendum asking the people of Bathurst if they would like a popularly-elected mayor.
Water sale: My team and I fundamentally believe in the value of science and the process of scientific investigation, research and results when assessing human impact on our natural environment. I believe in the role of uncorrupt science over and above blindly following any ideology.
Roundabout: This intersection is not an official black spot. Although some residents call this intersection ‘Bathurst’s worst intersection’ there have been very few bad accidents here (but plenty of ’near misses’). In 1997 $60,000 was spent on a traffic study that recommended major changes at the intersection but no evidence has shown that a roundabout was the best solution, especially if you take in to account the mix of school zone, bus zone, private carparks, tennis court and public park.
Australia Day: Australia Day should be kept on the same date, because it is based on factual historical dates of Australia. I would encourage the consideration of an alternative additional day that recognises and celebrates our Indigenous history and the 60,000 years of Aboriginal heritage, at a national level and decided at the national level.
TAFE building: I would like to see the old TAFE building re-purposed and re-developed as part of a Bathurst Town Square precinct. As Bathurst grows in population and tourism, we need to provide more pedestrian and family friendly outdoor space for the community to enjoy. This could be possible through a well-designed Town Square which could include the TAFE building as a multiple commercial and community-based building.
Rates cap: Not at this stage.
Christmas decorations: In my retail management experience I found that commercial high-quality Christmas decorations are incredibly expensive. If the local businesses and the community were also involved in the process, we could potentially create more value and higher impact Christmas decorations.
CCTV: Council should support CCTV but with a cost vs benefits considered as opposed to simply throwing money at the set-up. Intelligently designed and council facilitated ‘electronic neighbourhood watch’ system that council manages would be more effective.
Demolition by neglect: I personally recognise the importance of the heritage of the Bathurst region to the economy and lifestyle of the community and should be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Attendance: 2-3 meetings and looking forward to attending more in the future.
