At Tuesday’s candidate forum, held by the Bathurst Business Chamber, emcee Angus Edwards asked candidates to list their top three economic-based priorities if they were to be elected to Bathurst Regional Council.

Several candidates used their allotted one minute to advocate council using more local businesses and suppliers.

Ian North, speaking on behalf of Group D, said council needed to show more support for the business community. 

“We do a lot of things and I see a lot of outside companies and businesses coming to our town and selling their products and I think we should be a lot more local,” he said.

Group C’s Steve Semmens, who is also the vice president of the business chamber, drew on his experience working with businesses to stress the importance of using local suppliers. 

“I would like to encourage council to start utilising more of the local businesses as suppliers,” he said.

“I hear from so many stores out there where they have applied to supply council and have been knocked back and not given explanations. I want to get that changed.”

Independent candidate Nick Packham was also vocal in his support.

“I’m really keen to support local suppliers and businesses. In terms of any council contracts, I’d be wanting to shop locally,” he said. 

Jess Jennings, the lead candidate for Group C, also pledged his commitment to encouraging council to support local businesses and suppliers more.

One suggestion was to make sure major events offered locally produced alcohol instead of just commonly available varieties. 

At the same forum, most of the groups indicated that any candidates that were successful in their bid for election would aim to strengthen the relationship between council, the business chamber and local business community.

The candidates agreed that a stronger relationship with businesses would help boost the city’s economy, keep central business district shops occupied and improve employment opportunities.
