Each time an election is held, whether it is at a local, state or federal level, it always brings with it an array of volunteers to assist in getting candidates’ messages out.
On Saturday, polling booths around Bathurst were clogged with eager volunteers hoping to encourage voters to support a particular candidate.
One such volunteer was Brent Hoare, a Blue Mountains City councillor in Katoomba. Mr Hoare was here to support The Greens ticket, led by John Fry, Cathie Hale, David Harvey, Emma Paterson and Michael Mullen.
He said he had planned to help with a hazard reduction burn on election day, but as it was postponed, he decided to show his support for fellow Greens party members.
“It is the first time I’ve come out to Bathurst, but in the Blue Mountains, we have a long history of going out to the western suburbs [for elections],” Cr Hoare said.
He was one of 26 Greens councillors elected during the last local government election and he said he was hoping to see the number increase after this election.
Also helping to volunteer was Amy Witt, who arrived in Bathurst from London one year ago.
Ms Witt was handing out fliers for Group C, led by Jess Jennings, at Bathurst Public School.
She said she helped out at elections in London and wanted to do the same while in Bathurst.
“I wanted to volunteer today to get involved in the community,” she said.
“[Jess Jennings] seems like he is doing the right thing and is a fun, bubbly man.”
