IMAGINE you’re an older man, spending your days preparing your motor home for a trip around Australia. You take a step back from the engine bay and black out. When you come to, you find you’ve not only done yourself a few injuries, but you can’t walk either.
For 74-year-old Alan “Curly” Andrews, this was his world last year. Curly thought he was in real trouble, that his life might be over, with major concerns he was set to become a massive burden on friends and family.
“I knew I needed to get help because I didn’t want other people to have to look after me,” he said.
Enter Catholic Healthcare Community Services and the health and wellness team, who put together a tailored eight-week Walking with Confidence exercise program, designed specifically to improve mobility and help Curly get back on his feet.

When Health and Wellness Coordinator, Gary Kassab first met with Curly his key objective was to improve personal strength and gain the confidence to start living independently again. At the start of the program, Curly was bed bound all day.
Eight weeks later and beaming with pride, Curly is now back on his feet, mobile, and able to climb up and down the 30 steel steps between his backyard and his house.
“It’s changed my life, it really has,” Curly said. “I swear I’m proud of myself and how far I’ve come.”
Catholic Healthcare is a leading not-for-profit provider of Home Care services in the Central West.
