While the popularity of dash cams continues to increase, a Bathurst road safety expert cautions those using the devices to maintain safe driving practices.
“At times, the behaviour of drivers in camera equipped vehicles can change,” Matthew Irvine, director of Panorama Road Safety said. “Often they become emboldened, in the hopes of catching others’ behaviour on film. They start to see themselves as vigilantes. We are advocating that motorists don’t drive any differently because they have a camera in the car. You are still expected to drive low risk and cautiously.”

With 20 years experience in road safety matters, Mr Irvine said roads are busy places and car accidents don’t happen because people can’t brake, steer or change gears.
“Crashes occur because people make poor decisions,” Mr Irvine said.
“Motorists need to be focussed, be distraction free, leave plenty of time for their journey and think about where they are going and how they are going to get there.
“And remember, drivers are expected to take all reasonable steps to prevent crashes - regardless of who may be at fault.
“We want to see drivers who accept other drivers making mistakes and patiently accommodate those mistakes without fuss or aggression,” Mr Irvine said.
