Heading into the final event of the season, the United States based Killington World Cup, Thompson sat second in the world open skateboard standings.
He was hoping to make up the 188-point gap to Brazil’s Carlos Paixao, but in the end it was not to be.
Though Thompson actually ranked above Paixao for Killington, both men were unable to advance beyond the quarter-finals.
Thompson placed third in his quarter-final, with only the top two advancing to the semis.
The Bathurst talent ended up 11th, which saw him finish the season as world number four on 4,673 points.
Brazil’s Thiago Lessa (4,929) was crowned world champion with Paixao second (4,861) and American Aaron Hampshire (4,706) third.
It was a massive improvement on 2016’s 13th placing for Thompson.
“The points came close and a quick loss in concentration is brutal in this sport,” Thompson posted on facebook.
“This season has been full of learning and I'm stoked to do as well as I have. I will return home and work on all that I have learnt from the best in this sport and train to better myself for next season.
“Thank you to all the people that have supported me this year and thanks to the @idfracing for a banger of a season.
“Looking forward to what next year brings.”
