When Write About Me saluted for driver and trainer Nathan Turnbull it condemned one of his rivals to a familiar finish.
As expected, Write About Me ($1.30) won the Congrats Gem And Mat Pace (1,730 metres) at super short odds but he was pushed on the run for home by Limbo Larry.
The Jed Betts-driven and trained Limbo Larry ($9.80) has developed a knack for not winning his races but being able to consistently pick up top three finishes, and Wednesday night was no different.
Limbo Larry came close to causing a boil over with his strong run home but came up a neck shy of chasing down Turnbull’s leader.
Incredibly, Limbo Larry has now finished runner-up in four of his last five starts and has a career record of two wins and 26 minor placings.
Meanwhile, Turnbull’s victorious Sportswriter gelding was able to build on the encouraging results he showed in his recent Club Menangle Country Series Heats.
It’s his second win from the past four starts.
“He’s a tough little fella. Ever since I’ve had him he’s won a couple and got a few placings. The only time he hasn’t was during the Country Series where the horses are a bit better,” Turnbull said.
“I don’t know how many he’ll win but he always tries his guts out.
“He’s run a couple of races in the death before, so he’s a bit more tough than he is speedy, but he’s a funny horse. You’re better off letting him do his own thing.
“When he’s tucked in behind them he starts pulling and gets uncomfortable but if he’s out front running along he seems more comfortable.”
Write About Me’s winning mile rate was 1:57.6, just a tenth of a second shy of his career best time.
His third quarter of 27.7 threw down the challenge to his rivals.
“I knew he was running along,” Turnbull said of his runner.
“I had a look over to the death seat and the horse was struggling, so was the one behind me.”
When the gates went back Write About Me got to the front after an early challenge from Harley James on his inside.
Ma Koo Loo Frankie led the outside line alongside Harley James. Limbo Larry was sitting one out one back when the field settled.
Mid way through the final lap Write About Me started to slowly peel away from Harley James and Ma Koo Loo Frankie.
Ma Koo Loo Frankie slotted into the inside line, ahead of Harley James, and that gave Limbo Larry the chance to work forward without having to make a three wide move.
Inside the final 400m it became a race of two when Limbo Larry was the only horse who could match it with Write About Me.
Limbo Larry continued to eat away at the leader’s margin right up until the winning post but Write About Me had done enough in his speedy third quarter to see off the challenge.
