After months of speculation, the location has now been confirmed as a block of land behind the Bathurst PCYC, just a stone’s throw from Bathurst Base Hospital.
The NSW Government made a $6.6 million election commitment on the eve of the 2015 state poll to redevelop Bathurst’s historic ambulance station in William Street in the CBD or build a new one.
Then health minister Jillian Skinner made clear at the time that building a new station was the more likely outcome.
Mr Toole says a development application has been lodged with Bathurst Regional Council for the new station at 6 Commonwealth Street.
“The new station will feature a regional education centre, providing spaces for practical training, lectures and meetings for paramedics across the Central West Zone,” he said.
“It will also co-locate the Central West Zone office with Bathurst Ambulance Station, providing modern facilities that will better enable paramedics to deliver high quality out-of-hospital emergency patient care.”
The new station will include a 10 bay plant area, a wash bay and workshop bay; administration and office areas; amenities; logistics and storage areas; and staff parking.
The new station has been designed with input from local paramedics.
“Following approval of the development application and the land being acquired, tenders will be called for construction of the station,” he said.
“The new station is part of the NSW Government’s $122 million Rural Ambulance Infrastructure Reconfiguration (RAIR) program, which represents the biggest regional and rural transformation of NSW Ambulance infrastructure in the organisation’s history.”
The RAIR program includes 22 locations across the state that will benefit from an upgraded, rebuilt or entirely new ambulance station, including Molong and Grenfell, Mr Toole said.
Bathurst Regional Council confirmed earlier this year that it would be interested in discussing taking over the historic William Street ambulance station building.
“If the building should become available, council would be interested in entering into discussions with NSW Ambulance,” council general manager David Sherley said.
