On Wednesday, September 27, students of Charles Sturt University will be holding the workshop in the hopes of engaging students, staff and the community to reduce their waste.
Boomerang Bags is an initiative which works to reduce the use of plastic bags through encouraging people to create their own reusable bags.
Organiser of the workshop and CSU student, Layla Carroll says that the recent changes made to CSU’s waste strategy have been hugely successful with an average 42 per cent reduction in single use coffee cups since the university commenced its new waste strategy on August 1 and she hopes that such sustainable changes continue to be made by the students and staff.
“I think that students are really starting to change their behaviour and make more environmentally friendly choices but we still have a way to go.”
“We are hoping that the Boomerang Bag workshop will work in engaging the community to really stop and think about what goes into creating a product, whilst reducing the use of plastic bags. I also think that the workshop is a fantastic opportunity for not only the CSU community but the Bathurst community as a whole to come together against waste – we all have the opportunity to be a part of the solution and this workshop is a great chance for us all to unite and make a more sustainable choice.”
CSU’s Boomerang Bag workshop extends on the efforts of the Bathurst Wholefood Cooperative who established a local Bathurst Bans the Bag and co-op volunteer sewing bees in the local community.
The organisers behind the workshop are seeking volunteers to help with cutting, pinning, ironing, stamping and sewing. Any sewing resources such as machines, thread, scissors or donations of recycled material would also be of invaluable assistance.
All members of the Bathurst community are welcome to join the workshop whether they have sewing experience or not – all that is needed is an eagerness to be involved in the war against waste.
The event gets underway in the Food Bowl CSU, building number 1414, at 12 midday.
