On Saturday he got it, the Bathurst talent blasting 144 runs off 225 deliveries against Blacktown in their NSW Premier Cricket match at Sydney University Oval.
It was Trevor-Jones’ second century in the competition, but first in the top grade as his other – a 115 in 2014 – came in seconds.
“Finally, it’s been a long time waiting, so to do that was pretty good,” Trevor-Jones said.
“They’ve given me the opening gig this year with Nick [Larkin] and Ed [Cowan] away with so much state stuff … I took full advantage.
“To get the chance to open that batting this season, I wanted to get a big score early on, that was the plan, to get a big score and cement that spot. It really takes the pressure off.”
In the opening round of the season seven days earlier Trevor-Jones made seven coming in at number five. But when facing the new ball on Saturday, he showed what he was capable of.
In his 300 minutes at the crease, Trevor-Jones belted 15 boundaries. He and team-mate James Larkin (96) put on 326 for the first wicket to put Uni in a position of strength in the two-day match.
“It’s one of the better digs I’ve ever played, I hit the ball really well from the start,” Trevor-Jones said.
“I really didn’t give many chances, I hit the ball along the ground a lot. They bowled to my strengths a lot, I hit a lot of cover drives.
“Because we got on top early as well they set pretty defensive fields. I sort of only gave chances in that last 44 runs because we were trying to belt some quick runs and declare as we had the momentum.”
After he departed, Damien Mortimer – a player Trevor-Jones labelled ‘a rising star’ – kept the runs flowing with 107 off 136. Uni finally declared at 2-394 in the 87th over.
In the field the Bathurst player did not don the gloves – that job now belonging to Tim Cummins, the brother of Australian quick Pat. Uni took 2-19 in seven overs.
