THEY led for 64 of the 161 laps of Sunday’s Bathurst 1000, but in the end the Prodrive Racing Ford of Cam Waters and Richie Stanaway was not at the front when it mattered.
After looking a real chance of adding the Great Race win to their Sandown 500 victory last month, they had to settle for 16th.
Earlier Stanaway was brilliant in the wet and handed over to Waters in good position for one final push.
But on lap 145 when restarting following a safety car period, out of turn one the cars of Waters, Garth Tander and Chaz Mostert made contact.
The impact damaged the rear spoiler of Waters’ entry and he received a mechanical black flag.
“Just gutted, man. Second race in a row we had a car that could win, and just was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Waters said.
“Tried to push on and see if we could salvage anything, but nothing worthwhile. It’s a shame to have the day end like that, but that’s racing.”
