Parade had the opportunity to watch SES volunteers from across the state attempt different rescue scenarios in the Bathurst Showground precinct.
Some of the simulations were things that many volunteers would be familiar with, while others were rare for them to come across in their everyday work.
The SES was able to use the varied landscape around the showground to simulate flood rescues, mass casualty scenarios, rescues from heights, land searches and much more.
When Parade watched one simulation, she witnessed a lot of great communication among the teams and some good acting from the ‘casualties’.
While the Bathurst team may not have come first in the State Disaster Rescue Competition, they certainly had the chance to perfect their skills for different situations.
They also won the Team Spirit award and the Innovation award, so they were certainly doing something right.
Getting ahead of the masses
PARADE’S household is not making the same mistake twice.
Last summer, she and her significant other were feeling the burn indoors when the temperatures were soaring.
Without any form of cooling, except for a single pedestal fan, the couple were struggling to make it through the season.
Of course the simple solution would have been to purchase an air cooler, but by time they thought of this the stores were completely sold out.
But this year they thought ahead and have purchased one in October before it gets too hot and everyone else has the same idea.
No unbearable summer months for Parade’s household this time.
