Taking on Orange at the Country Club Oval, Chirgwin’s rivals had no answers for his 5.4 overs of off-spin. He conceded just eight runs as he helped Bathurst to a commanding 133-run win.
Bathurst co-coach Phil Cant was delighted with his effort, but praised other members of his attack as well as Orange was all out in the 33rd over.
“Izak is one of those boys who can bowl whatever you ask him, he can bowl medium pace and he can bowl spin,” Cant said.
“On Sunday he bowled spin and he just ripped through them. He was very, very accurate and I don’t know how much he turned it, but he just put it on the spot.
“He got two caught and bowleds, so he also fielded well off his own bowling. Our wicket-keeper Sam Hill did well too, he got a stumping off Izak.
“Jack Goodsell, he bowled very well at the beginning then Luke Mutton, he really tied them down.”
As well as Chirgwin’s impressive 6-8, Goodsell claimed 2-16 off eight overs and Mutton 2-10 from five.
Earlier, it was a strong performance with the bat that saw Bathurst apply pressure to their Orange rivals.
Bathurst made 7-237 off 50 overs as the benefit of having juniors play against good competition on a club level was highlighted.
After winning the toss, Bailey Brien (20) and Ben Cant (82) put on 44 for the opening wicket.
Cant’s stay at the crease lasted 168 minutes, the opener hitting seven boundaries before he was the sixth batsman to fall.
Coming in at number three, Hill accelerated things with 20 off 24, while Ben Mitchell (59 off 42) and Hugh Parsons (32 off 38) continued that momentum.
“The whole side has played a lot of representative cricket over the years and a lot of them are playing regular first and second grade cricket, which really helps as well,” the coach said.
“The boys batted really well, they saw off the new ball and then they started to play their shots.
“In an innings you always want someone to try and bat for a majority and be around at the end and Ben [Cant] did that really well, he worked his singles very well.
“Then Hugh Parsons and Ben Mitchell, they are bigger boys, having them step things up when they came in helped.
“I definitely thought it was enough. I thought if they got to 200 they could probably defend it, but I set them a big target of 260 for their innings, it was a fairly big ask, but it’s good to set high goals.
“That they managed somewhere in between that 200 and 260 was pleasing.”
Bathurst’s next game will be against Mudgee.
