The Chifley Zone RFS Cadet Championship will be held at George Park and feature three teams from Denison College Kelso Campus, two from Carenne School and one from The Scots School.

Carenne School assistant principal Terry Neal, who is also the deputy captain of the O’Connell RFS brigade, said the championship marks the end of training for the cadets.

“It means that all of the schools that have RFS cadets that they’ve been training for the last two to three terms, it culminates in this championship,” he said. 

The students will showcase their skills in four sections at the event before they get to graduate in a special ceremony later in the afternoon. 

Eglinton and Raglan brigades will lend a fire truck each for the day and 12 volunteers from the various brigades will be around to help out. 

The winner of the championship will be announced during the graduation ceremony.

Mr Neal said the program had been a really good opportunity for the cadets, where they have learnt about the role of the RFS, how to use the equipment, safe methods for putting out fires, first aid and radio communication. 

Cadets are encouraged to join their local brigade after completing their training at school.

“Carenne School had three of its previously trained students join brigades,” Mr Neal said.
