Club Triples Championships - semi-finals: John Archer, Denis Oxley and John Fulton vs Hans Hummelshoj, Gary Connors and Bob Lindsay. Despite winning the first four ends and leading 7-nil, and again leading 10-3, Hans’ team were denied the win. A 6 in the twelfth end gave Arch’s team a 2-shot lead which Hans and Co levelled the next end. Successive 3s took Team Archer into the lead and they were never troubled after that. Team Archer won 25-17, end 10-11.
Social Bowls Wednesday, October 11 game 1: Bob Lindsay and Ian Cunningham vs John Fulton and Bob Foster. Bob and Ian won the first twelve ends to lead 25-nil. We will draw a veil over the proceedings, suffice to say Bob and Ian had a decisive win.
Game 2: Norm Hayes and Annette Meyers vs Ray Noonan and John McDonagh. The lead see-sawed for the first twelve ends when the score was 11-all. After a dead end, Shorty and John took a 1-shot lead. However, Norm and Annette equalled with the next end, then extended their lead to 19-13. Shorty and John took the final end with 3 shots, but insufficient to stave off defeat. Norm and Annette won 19-16. Ends 10- 9 in favour of Team Hayes.
Game 3: Ted Summerfield, Ian Hurford and Hamish McKay vs Denis Oxley, John Martin and Phil Murray.
Scores were even at 5-all in the fifth, then Denis, John and Phil slowly drew ahead. However, Ted, Ian and Hamish caught up by the thirteenth end, leading 13-11. A 4 in the seventeenth end gave them a good lead, 20-12. Although Team Oxley won three ends after that, the win went to Team Summerfield 21-15. Ends 12-9 in favour of Ted’s team.
Friday, October 13 game 1: Ray Noonan and Hamish McKay vs Mick Sewell and Jim Box. Mick and Jim started well with a 5 in the first end, but a dry spell after that let Shorty and Hamish catch up. Scores were level at 5-all in the fifth, then after a 4 for Mick and Jim, level again at 10-all in the tenth. Singles each way meant 11-all in the twelfth, but Shorty and Hamish took the next four ends with a couple of 4s to lead 22-11. Team Sewell took the last two ends, but it was Team Noonan’s day, winning 22-15, and ends 12-6.
Game 2: Denis Oxley and Ditmar vs Ron Cambey and Ken Kitt. Ron and Ken led 6-1 in the fifth end, and 8-5 in the eighth but were overtaken by Team Oxley with a 4 to lead 9-8. Team Cambey responded with a 5 to re-take the lead 13-9. At the thirteenth end, the deficit was a single shot, 13-14. Each team scored 1s and 2s to finish up with a 17-all draw with ends 9-all.
Game 3: Norm Hayes and Graham Spurway vs Jack Smith and Pat Duff. Jack and Pat trailed by only a single point at the fourth end, 4-5, but Norm and Spud piled on the shots by winning the next six ends. A single 2 in the eleventh end for Jack and Pat was the end of their scoring. The score will be withheld to protect the reputations of the players.
Saturday, October 14 game 1: Bryan Bromfield and Paul Rodenhuis vs Norm Hayes and Trevor Kellock with Ross James as The Swinger. Ross played the Lead role really well, and probably even-handed, although the Skips might have thought otherwise. A very low-scoring game, Bryan and Paul led 9-5 after eleven ends. After sixteen ends, the scores were equal at 11-all. Bryan and Paul won four of the remaining five ends to take the win, 17-12. Ends 11-10 to Team Bromfield.
Game 2: Denis Harvey and Phil Murray vs Ray Noonan and Arch Ledger. With the scores even at 3-all at the fourth end, Denis and Phil leapt ahead, winning the next six ends for a 10-shot lead, 13-3. Ray and Arch fought back to trail by 5 shots, 14-9 at the fifteenth. That was the end of their scoring, Denis and Phil won the remaining six ends, winning the game 23-9 and ends 15-6.
Game 3: Paul Reece and George Ballard vs Bob Lindsay and Arthur Williams. Arthur and Bob took the lead, and from what I saw, Arthur was doing all the work. They led 8-5 in the eighth but Paul and George scored 4, 1, 4 to lead 14-8. From that point, ends were pretty even right up to the end with Paul and George winning 22-18. Ends 12-9 to Team Reece.
Game 4: Mick Sewell and Gary Hotham vs Jim Grives and Warren Masters. Mick and Gary led early taking the first two ends, but Jim and Warren scored a '5' and a '2' to lead 7-3. Mick and Gary responded by winning the next six ends, including a '5' to take the lead 14-7. Jim and Warren came within 2 shots in the thirteenth and again in the sixteenth but from then on, Mick and Gary too control of the match by winning the remaining five ends with the score 30-16. Ends 14-7.
Keeping in the spirit of having some drinks for the winners of the draw, Warren Masters donated the prize. Team Bromfield were the recipients - Ross, Bryan and Paul (third time in a row!).
Monday, October 16 jackpot round: Six players turned out for a Monday jackpot game of Triples. Alan Clark, John McDonagh and Graham Spurway vs Denis Oxley, Ian Hurford and John Martin. No match details are available but the final score was 26 - 16, a win to Team Clark. The Jackpot margin was 19, so not won. The Jackpot now stands at $118.
Majellan
By Bob the Bowler
Social Bowls: Great growing weather, automatic watering and a little TLC from the volunteers in the Greens Management Team had the Majellan greens looking a picture for this week’s Tuesday Afternoon Social Competition.
Tiger Smith, John Bosson and Terry Clark claimed a 30-22 game and daily rink win over Noel Witney, Peter Zylstra and Darrell Bellamy, after the Witney team took the early running. After jumping with a three in the first, the Smith team lead was 5-2 after three ends, but the Witney team came back to lead 17-9 after 10 ends. Then in a massive four end turnaround for 14 points, which included an eight in the 12 th end, the Smith team swamped the Witney team to lead 24-17 after 15 ends and with a four in the 19 th end, consolidated their lead to win the match running away.
Peter Naylor and Gus Thurgood teamed up to score a 22-19 win over Tony McNamara and Ron McGarry, still recovering from a bad dose of Man Flu. The McNamara team jumped first but a two and a five in response from the Naylor team had them out to a 7-1 score after just three ends and it was their match to lose from then on. After the seventh end, it was 7-7 and after the 17th it was 15-15, when the McNamara team then scored the second of two consecutive four shot end wins, to give them a 19-15 lead after 18 ends. A strong comeback, which included a five, from the Naylor team gave them the match in the 21 st end.
Athol Flanagan, John Hollaway and Paul Francis scored a four shot 28-24 win over Terry Burke, Kevin McNamara and Barry Quigley with the winner decided in the final three ends. The Flanagan team scored a two from the blocks with a strong response from the Burke team to lead 5-2, then the Flanagan team responded with 15 in four ends, to lead 17-5 after just eight ends. By the 19th end, the Burke team inched their way to a 24-23 lead but the Flanagan team rebounded with a three and one to take the match.
Mick Sewell, Bob Bembrick and Kevin Howard scored a “from the front” 28-13 win over Garry Cameron, Robert McLean and Terry Clark. Jumping to eight before the Cameron team scored their first points, the Sewell team seemed to score at will with 13 end wins to eight for the Cameron team in a comprehensive display which finished with twos in the final two ends.
Saturday Afternoon’s Social competition saw Tiger Smith, Ray Fitzallen and Bob Jenkins take a 30 15 game win, then the Daily Rink Prize and to complete the treble, the Jackpot prize of nearly $400. Up against Tony Urza, John Bosson and Darrel Bellamy, the Smith team powered off the blocks with a five-end run for 13 before the Urza team scored first points, and with 13 end wins under their belt in the match, it was the 17 end before the Urza team reached double figures.
A much closer affair on rink three saw John Hobson, Robert McLean and Tim Pickstone score a 20-18 win over Tony McNamara, Mick Redfern and Terry Clark, after the McNamara team scored early points to lead 6-2 after four ends. By the seventh end it was even at seven a piece and after the 11th end it was 10 all. From here the Hobson team pulled away scoring on 12 ends all up but a four in the last for the McNamara team indicated what might have been.
John Croaker, Mick Simmons and returning bowler from a much earlier time Terry George, scored a 36-13 white wash of Athol Flanagan, Gus Thurgood and Ron McGarry with a 14-7 end win percentage for the winning side. Jumping from the blocks with a four and scoring in rapid fire, the Croaker team were at 19-4 by the 10th end and a five in the 18th end for the Flanagan team enabled them to get to double figures while the Croaker team were on 34.
In the final Saturday match, Rhys Harvey and Ken Hartwig were delivering an even bigger result with a 33-9 win over Mick McDonald and Rick Atkins. The McDonald team led 3-1 after three ends, but a four, two and one response from the Harvey team had them out to 8-3 after six ends. By the close of the 13th end it was 14-9 for the Harvey team and the McDonald team were still in it, however, the Harvey team never let their opposition back to the mat scoring in all of the remaining eight ends for 19 unanswered points to comprehensively win the match.
The long-awaited Family First Credit Union Turnaround Triples Tournament is on this weekend, October 21 and 22, with 22 teams nominated for this highly regarded competition with teams from Birrong, Guildford, Bathurst City and across the Region.
Twilight bowls kicked off last week and will continue at 5.30pm every Friday through Summer for members and visitors and all are welcome. Nominations are being called for the 2018 Pennant teams and players are encouraged to sign up so that trial games can be played this year in preparation for the season start in March. Nominations for the Mixed Pairs and Triples for 2017 will close shortly as play in these Competitions will need to be completed by early December.
Number one green will be renovated immediately after this weekend’s Turnaround Triples and volunteers will be required on Monday October 23 to lend the Greens Team a hand to complete this work. Bring a wheelbarrow and shovel at 8.30am to help get the job done and speed up the return of the green to action as quickly as possible.
That’s it for now readers so until next week, remember as Ralph Waldon Emerson said - “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
