The NRL is expected to release its 2018 draw on Thursday and speculation is building that the North Queensland Cowboys will be revealed as Penrith Panthers’ opponents for their annual Bathurst match.
An injured shoulder kept Thurston off the field as the Cowboys went on a giant-killing run to this year’s NRL grand final, but the champion half is due back fit and refreshed for the start of the 2018 season.
Now 34, Thurston has retired from representative football so if the Cowboys were to play in Bathurst next year, not even a clash with the State of Origin series would rule JT out of the match.
The Cowboys would be a huge drawcard for the Bathurst match and offer a good return on Bathurst Regional Council’s $300,000-a-year deal with the Panthers to play here each year.
The Canberra Raiders have been the Panthers’ opponents for the past two years.
