Elaine and Lorraine were playing golf and wondering what other hobby they could pursue. Lorraine suggested bridge as she had seen an advertisement in the local paper.
They started to learn under the supportive guidance of Alison and Geoff Townley and then took lessons at the club with the late David Morrow.
They generally play three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
In addition Elaine usually plays Bridge Baron online for about a half an hour each evening whilst dinner is cooking.
Elaine says the bridge is a big thing in her life. She has made many new friends and it helps to keep her out of “mischief”.
Did you know?
IT is the responsibility of declarer to nominate the card they wish to play from dummy.
Dummy must not take any active part in playing a card or suggesting a line of play. They are simply to follow the play instructed by declarer.
Trophy winners
THE recent Helen Gordon Memorial trophy was won by Jennifer Hector and Rosemary Hummelshoj.
The Novice Tournament for players with 50 masterpoints or less will be held on the weekend of October 28-29. Please support this tournament if you are in a position to do so.
The club will be hosting a session of bridge and Mah Jong on Melbourne Cup day. This will be followed by a lovely luncheon so ferret out your glad rags and join us for a pleasant day.
Top tip: discards
IF you haven’t got a discard system then now is the time to get together with your partner and get one.
Here are some suggestions:
- Natural: Not ideal but better than nothing. The card you play on the first occasion when you can’t follow suit is the suit you would like partner to lead if they gain the lead.
- McKenney: Falling out of favour but basically a low even card indicates preference for the lower of the other two suits (ie. not the suit you can not follow or the suit you are playing) and a high even card shows preference for the higher ranking of the two remaining suits.
- Odds and evens: An odd card says I like this suit whereas an even card is McKenney.
