Still on a high after Australia's 23-18 come-from-behind win over the All Blacks in Brisbane, focus has already turned to the Barbarians match on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

With a spring tour to follow, Cheika has had to be cautious with his personnel and it is no surprise he has rested 13 of the players that featured in the third Bledisloe Cup instalment.

The entire starting tight-five from Saturday - Scott Sio, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Sekope Kepu, Rob Simmons and Adam Coleman - have been rested, while captain Michael Hooper and fellow back-rower Sean McMahon will also take the weekend off.

In the backs, Will Genia, Bernard Foley, Kurtley Beale, Reece Hodge, Marika Koroibete and Tevita Kuridrani have been given the week off as well.

Even though they will take no part in the match, players will still be required to train throughout the week in Sydney.

Meanwhile, prop James Slipper, a Wallabies captain for one Test, has been included after making his way back from an ACL injury in the NRC alongside another familiar face in back-rower Ben McCalman.

"It's a serious audition for the tour," said Cheika of Slipper. "You've got to give him some credit for the 87 Tests he's played and he's only 28. That type of experience in the northern hemisphere [will be beneficial]."

NSW Waratahs halfback Jake Gordon, Brumbies centre Kyle Godwin and Queensland Reds second-rower Kane Douglas have come into a 28-man squad that will assemble in Sydney ahead of a match that will give fringe players a chance to impress Cheika.

"There is a few spots open, there is some opportunities in this game," Cheika said. "It's almost difficult to think about putting that touring team together.

"We've been planning for that, having new guys in so we're ready for that load and how we're going to play it. It's gone to plan how we wanted it to. There's definitely going to be a couple of spots on the line when the game kicks off on Saturday."

Cheika will wait until the Sunday after the Barbarians fixture to name his spring tour squad for matches against Japan, Wales, England and Scotland in November.

Israel Folau will still pull on the boots this weekend for it will be his last showing in Australian colours this year after Cheika revealed his star fullback will be taking the rest of the season off.

After another excellent showing in Brisbane, man-of-the-match Jack Dempsey is also in line to get more minutes under his belt against a Barbarians team coached by Alan Jones.

The Wallabies have only played the Barbarians once in Australia and were 55-7 winners on that day in 2009 at Allianz Stadium.

Meanwhile, second-rower Rob Simmons has escaped a serious neck injury after being taken from the field early in the second half of Australia's emphatic five-point win over the All Blacks.

"He took all the precautionary X-rays and scans which cleared him of any type of fracture," Cheika said. "He's got a really sore neck.

"I probably won't be able to throw him out there this week but I reckon he should be OK for the Japan game."

Cheika confirmed Brumbies scrum coach Dan Palmer would once again help out the team at training in Sydney.

"He's going to come in and just shadow for Monday and Tuesday," Cheika said. "After that, we'll decide if he comes on the tour or if we just decide to go there ourselves with the strategy we know."
