Hanrahan had ground to make up after the 300 metres swim leg as he tackled the season opener, but an impressive cycle and strong run saw him clinch victory.
Also familiar with longer format triathlons, Hanrahan said that he only faced a 2.5 kilometre run following the 16.5km cycle leg meant he worked hard to establish a lead.
“It felt alright on the bike, I pushed pretty hard knowing I was only doing the short one and I only had to run 2½ kays,” he said.
“I’ve done plenty of running through winter, I’ve done couple of marathons and what not, so 2½ kays is pretty easy. I did one in Mudgee and another one in Sydney, mainly because it is just too cold to swim and bike ride then.”
Mitch Nelson was the first out of the water, but the talented junior was caught by Hanrahan on the cycle leg. Dennis Martin was second into the final transition as he too impressed on the bike, and had just under two minutes to make up as he set off into the run.
It was a gap he was unable to make up. Hanrahan crossed the line in 39.08, with Martin (41.22) second and Nelson (45.50) third.
As for the triathlon season ahead, Hanrahan will continue to support Bathurst club events as well as taking on some bigger challenges.
“I haven’t entered in anything at the moment, but I will probably do the Penrith Half Ironman in four weeks time and then probably the Husky long course in February,” he said.
