The 13-year-old Denison College Bathurst High Campus student was recently announced as the 2017 Mathletics Tri-Nations Challenge winner in the Year 8 category.
The online international competition was open to kindergarten to Year 10 students from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Jonathan was among more than 1.5 million students who registered from 6000 schools that took part.
In all, the students completed more than 2.5 million activities during the week-long competition and they were awarded points based on their success rates.
“My maths teacher told me about it and she said for homework you’re doing the Mathletics,” Jonathan said.
And it only took a couple of days for him to get hooked.
“I saw my name on the leaderboard, I was 20th and 5000 points off the lead,” Jonathan said.
“It took me a few days but eventually I got first.”
Jonathan said his teacher Donalee Delahunty was the reason behind his love for the subject.
“She has her own style [of teaching] which I find really interesting,” he said.
“She just knows how to teach it and keep everyone interested.”
In all, Jonathan accrued 100,00 points during the competition, which was well above the second place student at Terang College in Victoria who scored 83,022.
Bathurst High Campus was the 41st top performing school in the challenge.
