Billy Johns died in a Kelso house fire seven years ago, but his mother, Jacki Kovacs, has been denied a coronial inquest into his death despite repeated requests, with State Coroner Michael Barnes concluding the fatal fire “was not lit by anybody external to the house.”
Ms Kovacs was forced to postpone the Walk for Billy Day, because of administrative issues over public liability insurance, but said when it’s held next year on April 15, it will be even bigger and better.
“I'm very sad that we have had to postpone Billy Johns walk. But we didn't want us or other people to get big fines if we went ahead,” she said.
“We will give council everything they need and more and next April walk for Billy day will be bigger and better than it would have been.
“I would like that thank everyone for their support and wanting to do this for my little boy.
“Next year it falls near (what would have been)his 12th birthday.
“I will continue the fight for the truth and justice and will never stop until I do. My boy deserves this.
“I hope to see you all there next year. This just gives me more time to plan. Thanks so much everyone. It means a lot to my family and myself,” she said.
A petition calling for the Coroner to review his decision not to hold an inquest is still available to be signed, and in shops in the central business district.
Ms Kovacs said she has already received full petition pages back and is in the process of getting more out there.
“Everyone has been amazing,” she said.
