Bathurst Bridge Club hosts Novices Congress

OUR club once again hosted our Novice Congress recently.

Players with less than fifty masterpoints could compete and have the advantage of playing with players with a similar level of experience.

John Shields was the person who instigated this Congress and worked hard to ensure its success. He was assisted by many including Convenor Karin le Roux, president Chris Rosevear, director Ed Barnes and the club members who contributed in many ways, most notably Margaret Humphreys who worked in the kitchen for the whole weekend.

Players competed from clubs from Bathurst, Redlands (Qld), Brisbane Waters, Peninsula, Sydney, Illawarra, Mollymook, Canberra, Cootamundra, Goulburn, Orange and the Blue Mountains.

In the pairs on Saturday the first place overall went to a team from Illawarra but second place went to our local pairing of Phil Cummings and Dick Ellis. Alan Adcroft and Peter Horwood were successful in their category.

More success followed on Sunday with local players Peter Horwood and Alan Adcroft teamed with Jim Driscoll and Sue Stacey (Canberra) taking out first place.

In second place was another local team, Joy and John Adams with Phil Cummings and Kevin Wilds.

Third place went to a Sydney team.

Congratulations to these players and indeed to all who competed.

Player profile

AFTER Kevin Wilds retired and moved from a life in the country farming into Bathurst he was encouraged by his sister Trish Burke to take up bridge.

The family had always enjoyed playing cards but it was only about four years ago that Kevin learnt to play bridge.

He went to lessons with Bob Dillon at the club and was also encouraged by Trish and her bridge partner Marie Dennis.

Kevin now plays bridge at least twice a week and absolutely loves the game.

His only regret is that he didn’t start years ago.

Top tip

THERE are three reasons to overcall in the bidding.

They are to compete for the contract, to interfere with the opponents bidding or to suggest to partner a suit to lead.

WE had a partnership misunderstanding. My partner assumed I knew what I was doing.
