Less than 24 hours after a crash on the boards at Dunc Gray Velodrome saw Carter’s Sydney Cup On Wheels program come to a premature end, he was back on his bike at the same venue.

The omnium is a multiple race event, so in order to earn his elite men’s state bronze medal, Carter certainly had to test his resolve as well as his legs.

He began the Sunday program by placing second in the 40-lap elite men’s scratch race. That was followed by a fifth in the tempo and third in both the elimination and points races.

Bathurst Cycling Club’s Mick Robinson was watching on as Carter pushed hard in his final race to earn an overall podium.

“[On Saturday] He crashed in the race before the wheel race, so he didn’t actually get to start the wheel race. But he came back in the omnium carnival and did very well, he placed third overall,” he said.

“It came down to the last sprint in the last race. There were three riders all on the same points and it came down to a countback.

“That was a state championship event, so he’s got a bronze from that.

“That he backed up from crashing out from the night before, he was obviously testing his injury, how much damage he’s done to himself. He got through the day very well.”

Carter was not the only Bathurst rider to compete at the omnium titles, with Harrisen Bryant (junior men 19), Brooke Tuynman (division two women) and Kalinda Robinson (division two women) riding as well.

They enjoyed a number of top 10 finishes, with Robinson placing third in the elimination race.

Former Bathurst Cycling Club member Emily Watts, who now represents Sydney Uni Velo, nabbed a first place in the junior women 19 tempo and rode her way to third in the points race.

Carter, who is a member of the Cycling NSW team, has competed at Oceania level on both the road and track in the past.

This year’s Oceania Track Championships, which begin on Monday, will be staged at the Avantidrome in Cambridge, New Zealand.
