Each year, with the support of Bathurst businesses, the promotion gives people the chance to be rewarded for shopping locally over the festive season. 

Western Advocate sales manager Nils Gustafson said it was good for businesses and the economy to shop locally.

“It's important to shop locally as much as possible, given that it keeps local employment levels strong and ensures money continues to stay in town to keep our local economy strong, rather than buying presents online,” he said.

This year, there are more than 45 stores participating in the promotion.

Their customers go into the running for one of four weekly prize draws and the major prize of a $5000 shopping spree at Harvey Norman Bathurst. 

Harvey Norman has participated in the promotion for a number of years and Furniture and Bedding franchisee Abbie Miller said it was something the store enjoyed supporting. 

“We like to have customers come in and feel like they are part of something in the community,” she said. 

The shopping spree will give the lucky winner the chance to purchase anything for the store’s threes departments.

“They can buy whatever they want, whether it be a Christmas present for someone else or a Christmas present for themselves,” Ms Miller said. 

Last year’s winner used her prize to purchase a new lounge suite. 

Mr Gustafson said the weekly prize draws were another great opportunity for residents, as anyone in the draw could win a selection of vouchers to spend with local retailers.
