The one dayer, held in March, featured ride legs in every state and territory to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention.
Bathurst was one of a number of locations throughout NSW, including Coffs Harbour, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga, to host a leg of the ride.
“This year we had a couple of extra events, being the Pig Wars Challenge in November, and the Show and Shine and Charity Auction held with the support of the Panorama Hotel,” Bathurst Black Dog Ride co-ordinator Rosemary Hancock said.
“Both of these events helped boost our fundraising this year.
“While the main aim of the Black Dog Ride is to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention, all funds raised for Lifeline Central West go towards helping to heavily subsidise the cost of training volunteers and provide a much-needed support network for the many people suffering from mental health issues.
“Volunteer training gives a nationally recognised accreditation which gives excellent skills for life that can be used in any line of work, and Lifeline will cover almost 90 per cent of the initial cost as well as all ongoing training costs in return for working as telephone counsellors.”
Ms Hancock said there had been a Black Dog Ride one day ride in Bathurst since 2014 and the support from Bathurst Regional Council and local businesses had been “fantastic”.
“It’s such an important issue and people need to know that there is someone who cares and help is available,” she said.
Ms Hancock said the preparations for the 2018 Black Dog Ride are already underway.
The ride will be held on March 18, 2018, there will be a Pig Wars Challenge on a date still to be confirmed and the Bike Show and Charity Auction will be held on the day before the ride, March 17.
