The road and bridge have been closed since September 18 when stage one of flood mitigation works kicked off for an expected six week works schedule.
The $4 million, two-stage project, aims to lessen the impact of flooding in the village and includes a levee, creek improvement works and stormwater flood pumps.
But, just days before stage one works were supposed to be complete council announced there would be a 4-5 week delay due to the discover of poor quality material at the base of the culvert foundation and groundwater subsequently flowing into the excavation.
As the work continues this week, contractors will construct a 15 metre by 17 metre concrete slab that will sit underneath the box culverts.
The slab includes approximately 14 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 85 cubic metres of concrete.
“These culverts will form the new, wider crossing over Queen Charlottes Vale Creek,” council’s web update states.
“The slab will sit on more than 2000 tonne of rock that was brought onto site to create a solid base in the creek bed.
“The pouring of the slab required pedestrian access at the site to be limited at times, to ensure the safety of the public.”
As part of the process a series of concrete cylinder tests have been taken.
“These samples will be tested in a NATA approved testing laboratory on Monday to ensure the concrete used meets the required strength required for the four cell box culvert that will sit on it,” the update continues.”
“Once the testing has been completed, the box culverts will be craned into place on the concrete slab.”
Once the culverts are in position, backfilling of soil will commence.
Contractors are working on site 6.5 days a week following an extension of working hours.
The overall project will be completed by the end of January 2018.
Meanwhile, road diversions will continue and businesses in Perthville remain open for trade during the works.
