Even though CSU’s first and second grade teams will not be playing in the new Blowes Clothing Cup top tier next year, the colts team will have its chance to give it to the Central West big boys in 2018.

Forbes, Orange City, Orange Emus, Bathurst Bulldogs, Dubbo Kangaroos and Cowra will all play in a new top tier competition next year but the students will continue to field a team in the top grade colts premiership, filling the void left by the omission of a Cowra under 20s team.
“The team is going to be under our banner and we’re going to have a variety of colts to play in place of Cowra,” Plunkett said.
“We are not going to be called the CSU Eagles. It’s still going to be CSU Mitchell Rugby and we are providing colts which they [Cowra] cannot.”
While this is the current plan, it will be dependant on player sign-ups during the university’s orientation week in February.
“That is yet to be confirmed. We don’t know how many colts we are going to have until O-Week starts,” Plunkett said.
Regardless, the club captain said it will be good experience if the colts team play in the top tier.
“For them, they get to play the biggest and strongest clubs in the comp. The development of themselves is going to be fantastic for us,” he said.
“For them, their rugby will improve dramatically.
For [CSU colts], they get to play the biggest and strongest clubs in the comp.
- CSU club captain Nick Plunkett
“Historically, our colts are almost always our best performers at the club and we do take a lot of passion with our colts.
“That’s why Charlie McIntosh pushed so hard for the team to perform and to nominate a colts to the top level.”
In recent years, CSU has struggled for player numbers and Plunkett said it’s a chance for the club to rebuild.
“It’s a good chance for us to strengthen our club and rebuild,” he said.
“On average, we were being beaten by 30 points by those top teams [in the 2017 season]. It’s not good to lose like that every week.
“It’s probably a good opportunity for us to get a few wins and boost the club morale, our playing and confidence on the field.”
Plunkett said the club is currently in the process of selecting a new colts coach, after Jack Kelly did not remain on.
The club is also still looking for a head coach and a first and second grade coach.
