Work started on the $10 million project last week, which will see the shopping centre expanded and the car park double in capacity.
Hines Constructions will complete the work over the next 15 months and managing director David Hines said it will improve the shopping experience in Windradyne.
“It is a complete redevelopment of Westpoint Shopping Centre. It is basically to improve the centre overall,” he said.
“It is a $10 million investment to extend and improve the shopping centre, which will at the end of the day provide a good shopping experience in Windradyne.”
Mr Hines said the work would be completed in stages, around six in total.
“It has got to be done just so we keep the interruptions to the businesses there to a minimum,” Mr Hines said.
As part of the project, the liquor store and newsagent will be relocated, the floorspace extended to around 1200 square metres for the IGA Supermarket and current stores will be given a face-lift.
A childcare centre will also be built to cater to 100 preschool-aged children.
Development manager Jonathon Carlile said his hope is to provide more food options and specialty stores at the complex as a result of the development.
“There will be room certainly for hair, beauty and nails salons and there is room for more food options,” he said.
Mr Carlile added that there would also be commercial office spaces available adjacent to the existing medical centre.
Considering the location of Westpoint, it would create perfect opportunities for new businesses wanting to open up in a stable location.
“There is about 16,000 people in what we would consider our catchment area, and that is bigger than many country towns,” he said.
Mr Hines said the first stage of the works was building the new car park and creating a drive-through, which is designated for a coffee shop, on the western side of the development.
“The main thing is that the biggest improvement will be the ease of parking; we are doubling the number of parking spaces,” he said.
“There will be 162 spaces, which will sort of bring it all on the one level.
“The ease of driving into the centre and finding a park will be the biggest difference.”
He said the development would put Westpoint in a position to meet demands for the next 20 to 30 years.
