Now in its 36th year, 52 teams will play across the two days with $10,000 in prize money up for grabs with some of the best national and international bowlers to be in action.
Teams will play in groups of four and will play five games – three on Saturday and two on Sunday – in a round-robin format.
Bathurst City Mens Bowling Club president Ross James expects next weekend’s tournament to be extremely competitive.
“That’s the big thing about it, it’s 52 teams and it’s competitive all the way through,” he said.
“You’ve got to play five games, so the draw makes a big difference to who you draw. A lot of the time we like to draw the good blokes because that’s the challenge of the tournament.”
“It’s a random draw, five games, you don’t know who you’re playing until you actually pull your card off the table.”
Last year’s tournament was won by Gerard Green, Trevor Ferguson, Joshua Green and Bob Edgar from the Lawson Bowling Club.
The team pulled off the surprise win after a late change, as Edgar come in for the late Joshua Green.
The Lawson team will return next weekend, to defend its title.
James, however, cannot pick one team out to win the tournament but instead said there are a few candidates that could be champions come Sunday afternoon.
“David Holt, of course, is one of the better credential players. He’s an international player, who’s won world championships, major titles, major tournaments. He’ll be very strong,” he said.
“Richard Girvan is a Kiwi international. He’ll be very strong.”
“The winning side from last year, is also coming back. I assume they’ll be coming back with the same team.”
Locally, James said the team led by Phil Gray has got a strong chance.
James’ own team features Brian Bromfield, Bobby Lindsay and Geoff Thorne.
Other notable competitors include former Australian representatives Steve Anderson and Rex Johnson, current Australian coach Steve Glasson and Australian indoor champion Dave Ferguson.
District and zone champion Lee Stinson will also make an appearance on December 2 and 3.
Current under 18 singles Australian champion Jono Davis will also play.
Bathurst City Men’s Bowling Club thanked the support from major sponsors Bathurst Real Estate and Bathurst Regional Council.
