Forensic police and general duties officers were at the scene of the fatality late Wednesday evening when they arrested a 52-year-old man who, they allege, refused to stop at the diversion and attempted to drive through the crash scene.
Police and other emergency services were called to the scene of the crash three kilometres from Wattle Flat on the Sofala Road after a car and a pushbike collided just after 4pm on Wednesday.
Inspector Paul McCann from Chifley local area command said the 61-year-old male cyclist was riding south on the Sofala Road when his bike collided with a Nissan X-Trail driven by a 40-year-old Metford man and travelling in the same direction.
Inspector McCann said the driver of the car stopped to render first aid but the cyclist died at the scene.

State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service personnel diverted traffic as an officer from Hill End, assisted by forensic officers, investigated the cause of the crash.
The driver of the X-Trail was taken for mandatory blood and urine tests.
Inspector McCann said as police continued their investigation, a 52-year-old man who was told to stop by SES traffic controllers failed to do so and allegedly tried to drive through the crash site.
He was immediately stopped and arrested by both the Hill End officer and a forensic officer.
Inspector McCann said the man was taken to Bathurst police station where he was charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest. Police allege the man refused to stop at the traffic diversion because he needed to get to work.
While the Sofala Road was closed in both directions, Inspector McCann said traffic diversions via Hill End Road and Turondale Road were in place, enabling traffic to continue to flow around the fatality while officers investigated the matter.
The 52-year-old driver was later bailed to appear before Bathurst Local Court on December 4.
Meanwhile, investigations into the fatality are continuing with the victim’s bicycle and the Nissan to undergo forensic analysis.
Chifley police are urging anyone with information on the crash to contact Bathurst police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
