Under the restructure Chifley LAC absorbs Cowra and Canowindra.

Acting Superintendent, Luke Rankin said he is enthusiastic about the change.

“The changes are about enabling us to serve our communities more effectively and realigning resources to where they are most needed.  Another benefit for our area will be the new regional squads that are being created and will be supporting us to tackle serious crime issues into the future,” he said.

Supt Rankin said as announced by the Commissioner yesterday Chifley are taking on the Cowra and Canowindra areas which are currently part of the Canobolas Local Area Command. 

“We do not lose any area. Perhaps a bigger impact for us will be the adoption of a different management model.  We will become the 'Chifley Police District' and move to a new model specifically tailored for country policing, reflecting the differences between country and city policing,” he said. 

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller, APM, and Deputy Commissioner Regional Field Operations Gary Worboys announced the new policing model for regional NSW as part of re-engineering on Thursday.

The current 34 Local Area Commands in regional NSW will be replaced by 26 Police Districts.

Police Districts will have a District Superintendent with varying spans of control, while each District will incorporate an ‘Officer-in-Charge’ model for each of its police stations.

Commissioner Fuller said designing a unique policing model for regional NSW has been a priority of re-engineering.

"A large aspect of re-engineering is putting more police back on the frontline and a flexible workforce is a good outcome for regional communities," Commissioner Fuller said.

“The new Police District model has been designed to significantly improve our capability to service Regional NSW,” he said, adding policing in regional areas differs greatly from the city.
