The school introduced the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program this term.
Bathurst West is one of only a few schools in Bathurst to implement this food education initiative that highlights the health benefits of eating fresh, seasonal produce from the garden.
Bathurst West’s Gillian Keough, Kelly Muldoon and Jodeen Jackson say they are excited to be able to provide hands-on gardening and cooking lessons to year one and year six students.
In the garden, the children learn how to grow and harvest a variety of vegetables, fruit and herbs. In the kitchen, the students prepare a range of delicious dishes from the organic produce grown in the garden.
The program is integrated into the new Australian Curriculum and reinforces aspects of environmental sustainability.
“The school has been very fortunate to have had support from Bunnings Warehouse, Bathurst Regional Council, Mac-Attack and the school’s P and C,” a Bathurst West spokesperson said.
“Bathurst West Public School is very grateful to the volunteers who help each week with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden lessons.”
Those who are interested in being a volunteer in the program are asked to contact the school office on 6331 1142.
