Hewitt’s Breeders Challenge-winning filly Royal Story ($4) was chased down by Brad Hewitt’s race favourite Our Triple Play ($2.30) over the final 50m in a heart breaking defeat.
Royal Story – making just her second start since her Group 1 triumph in June – took the field into the home turn with Our Triple Play looming on her outside.
Delightful Memphis ($3.40), driven by Bathurst’s Ashlee Grives, always wasn’t far away from the leading pair at the top of the straight.
Bernie Hewitt and his mare appeared to have the race won on the line but the photo finish showed the charging favourite had got his nose in front.
Our Triple Play’s winning mile rate was 1:59.2, going six tenths of a second quicker than his track record time a week earlier.
