It’s not that her team did not want her to tackle Australia’s most prestigious women’s stage race with them, but rather because the Bathurst Cycling Club product is too young.
“My team entered me, but because I am still an under 19s, I’m not allowed to ride,” Watts, who placed third in the under 19 women’s criterium at nationals, said.
“It was really disappointing because my team wanted me, they entered me. I’m still going down and watching though.”
The four-stage Women’s Tour Down Under starts on Thursday and though Watts will only be a spectator, team officials are keen to see what she can do as the season unfolds.
“We’re looking forward to seeing this talented young rider develop,” the team posted on Facebook.
