Emergency services scrambled to the accident scene at Mount Lambie, near the intersection of Thorpes Pinch Road, at 7.13pm on Wednesday.
A Chifley Local Area Command spokeswoman said a Mazda 3 sedan travelling in easterly direction collided head-on with a large truck.
The accident left debris scattered across the roadway and the highway closed for hours.
The woman, who was the only occupant of the car, died at the scene.
Police have still not released the woman’s name.
The male truck driver was taken to Bathurst Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. He suffered minor injuries.
“Crime scene officers from Western Sydney were called to the scene and undertook an extensive investigation of the scene,” the police spokeswoman said.
This latest death adds to the 27 other people who have been killed on roads around Bathurst since 2012, data from Transport for NSW shows.
Along with the fatalities, 184 people were left seriously injured on Bathurst region roads.
Numbers across the Central West were just as shocking – with 161 people killed and a further 1396 seriously injured on the roads.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Acting Sergeant Ian Stibbard said there were many reasons behind the high number of accidents on Bathurst roads.
The Mitchell Highway, between Bathurst and Orange, has also been the scene of many accidents, often with tragic outcomes.
