Five of the city's cultural facilities participated in the international day for the second time on Wednesday, the decision paying off, with around double the attendance on the first year.
Museums manager Janelle Middleton said it was clear very early in the day that there was going to be big attendance numbers.
"We had 1000 visitors through the museums last year by the end of the day and this time by lunch we had 1000," she said.
The majority of the visitors were locals, but people outside of Bathurst also embraced the day.
Ms Middleton said the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum and the National Motor Racing Museum proved to be the most popular, attracting around 700 people each throughout the day.
People were encouraged to take selfies while in the museums and post them to Bathurst Regional Council's social media pages for the chance to win a $100 Buy Local Gift Card.
Children who took selfies were competing for a merchandise pack filled with items from the museums.
Winners will be chosen after all the photos are reviewed.
Ms Middleton said Museum Selfie Day will definitely return.
"We will keep it as an annual day, and it is giving back to the community too," she said.
