While Caleb Ewan won the 146.2 kilometre stage from Unley to Stirling to claim the ochre jersey, Renshaw’s team-mate Nicholas Dlamini ensured he will start stage three in polka dots.
After earning the king of the mountain jersey on day one, he attacked early as part of a three-man breakaway on Wednesday. His goal was to target the 2.5km category two climb at Tea Tree Gully.
That came 12.8km into the stage and Dlamini was once again the first man up the slope to collect the points on offer.
While he dropped back to the peloton with 109km to go, it continued his impressive start for the team.
“This is the highest level of the sport, so I am really excited to be wearing a leader’s jersey in my first race, I hope for more of the same during the rest of the season,” he said.
As well as the temperature hitting 37 degrees, the stage finished with three laps of a tricky 21.1km circuit.
Bathurst talent Renshaw was dropped from the lead bunch and not there to contest the final sprint.
He ended up crossing the finish line 7:21 after Ewan with a group including stage one winner Andre Greipel.
The third stage will see Renshaw’s legs tested over 146.5km from Glenelg to Victor Harbor.
