EMERGENCY services are on scene at a plane crash north-west of Bathurst.
Police, fire, ambulance and rescue crews were called to Piper’s Airfield in Eglinton just after 1pm on Sunday with reports a glider had crashed which had then ignited a grass fire.
NSW Rural Fire Service Operational Officer Brett Taylor confirmed the plane had crashed.
“A powered glider was on fire when it crashed,” he said.
“There was one person in the plane.”
The glider crashed into a grassed area just away from the airfield runway and this ignited a grass fire which spread to an area of around three hectares.
“The fire is contained now and the scene has been handed over to police,” Mr Taylor said.
Thick black smoke could be seen from many areas of Bathurst following the incident.
Emergency services were unable to confirm the condition of the person in the plane at this time.
More to come.
