Competing in the under 16s 100 metres, but under T20 classification, Drewe finished in a time of 12.40 seconds, breaking the old classification record by 0.5 of a second which was set in 2006 by Queensland athlete.
Drewe finished third in the record-breaking race, while he claimed gold in the 200 metre, also in the under 16s category.
Carenne teacher Adam Ryan said Drewe’s hard work has paid-off.
“We’d go to the Macquarie River and do some sprints up the hills and do some sprints at the stairs at the foot of the mount,” he said.
“His mum always works delivering pamphlets. She would be in the car getting him to run to each mailbox, delivering the catalogues.”
Ryan said Drewe had some good competition with Samuel Walker, a runner from Tasmania with a T38 classification.
“Connor beat him the 200, then Sam beat him the 100,” Ryan said.
“To get to that place, Connor had to finish first and second at Homebush in the NSW selection ones. He got firsts and seconds in that, which qualified him for Adelaide.”
It’s the furthest competition Drewe has reached and Ryan said they will be in contact with Athletics NSW in regards to any other programs Drewe can pursue.
“Paralympics could be a goal for him, if he continues on down the path,” he said.
