Trained by the great Tommy Smith and owned by Evelyn Haley, from Wimbledon near Bathurst, champion race horse Tulloch achieved 36 wins from 55 starts.
The Haleys were a horse breeding and farming family that was famous in Bathurst area from the early 1920s until the 1960s.
Their stud Te Koona is just out of Wimbledon and bred hundreds of winners during those decades and when he retired, he went to the stud at Te Koona with the Canberra Times reporting that “hundreds lined the streets of Bathurst” to cheer the champion home.
More than 50 years after he attracted crowds to race tracks, he remember as a great.
Tulloch is a former winner of the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup, finished seventh in the 1960 Melbourne Cup and has been inducted into both the Australian and New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame.
Most horse racing analysis rate Tulloch as the best three-year-old to race in Australia, even better than racing legend Phar Lap.
They also agree that he is still among the best six horses to race in Australia, with his versatility and brilliance almost incomparable.
He won at every distance from 1000 metres to two miles.
No wonder the Tulloch Cup is one of the highlights of Legends Day, which will be held at Tyers Park this Sunday.
Linnett will be talking to readers and signing copies of the book from 4pm on Saturday, however, as the shop has limited space, guests need to book in advance.
