In the end experienced Blue Mountains orienteer Mark Freeman got the nod as he recorded a fast 30:29 for the demanding hard course category at Lions Park.
But rookie Windsor (31.03) was not far behind as he earned a podium finish, while Michael Ridley Smith (32:08) placed third and Orange’s Anna Fitzgerald (35:02) – a competitor with international experience – was the quickest female.
The series is organised by the Orange Goldseekers Orienteering Club who are keen to establish a club in the Bathurst district after the success of the national championships, which were contested in the city in 2017.
There are plans to introduce both a moderate and easy course as the series unfolds to help attract more people to the sport. The series continues this Sunday at the Bathurst TAFE Complex.
